How Are Copper Busbars CNC Machined?
CNC machining creates the holes, slots, contours and reference features that allow a custom copper busbar to fit its electrical assembly. The goal is not simply to remove material; it is to locate every critical feature consistently while maintaining clean edges and usable contact faces.

Why machining accuracy matters
Holes locate the part, carry fasteners and create electrical interfaces. A small positional error can make a rigid busbar difficult to install or can place stress on terminals. The drawing should identify datums and apply close tolerances only to features that truly control fit. That approach protects performance without adding unnecessary cost.
Typical machined features
- Round holes for bolts, pins and terminals
- Slots for installation adjustment or thermal movement
- Profiles and notches for clearance
- Counterbores or recesses where specified
- Contact pads and shaped transitions
The process choice may be CNC milling, drilling, punching or a combination. The best choice depends on volume, thickness, edge quality and geometry.
Control burrs and contact surfaces
Copper is ductile, so machining parameters and tool condition influence burr formation. Burrs can affect safe handling, coating adhesion, insulation coverage and seating against a mating surface. A defined deburring step and inspection of critical edges are important parts of the process.
Contact faces should remain flat, clean and free of unintended coating. If a finished part will be plated or insulated, the drawing must show masked zones so the manufacturing route protects the intended electrical interface.
Inspect against the drawing
Inspection commonly checks overall dimensions, hole diameter, critical hole position, slot dimensions and visible burrs. For complex parts, a first-article report helps confirm the production setup before the full quantity is made. The appropriate measurement method should match the tolerance and functional risk.
What to include in the RFQ
