Copper Busbar Plating: Tin vs Nickel vs Bare Copper
Copper has excellent conductivity, but its exposed surface changes over time. Plating can support corrosion resistance, contact consistency and assembly requirements. The right choice depends on the operating environment, mating terminals, temperature and the application specification—not simply on appearance.

Bare copper
Bare copper is appropriate where the environment, storage, assembly and contact design are controlled. It offers the base material’s high conductivity and can be cost-effective. However, oxidation and handling contamination must be considered, particularly for long storage periods or exposed contact areas.
Tin plating
Tin plating is a common option for electrical busbars. It can improve resistance to surface oxidation and help provide a stable contact surface in many bolted or clamped joints. Define the coverage, thickness requirement where applicable, masked zones and inspection expectation. Correct torque and clean joints remain essential.
Nickel plating
Nickel plating may be selected for applications that require a different combination of environmental or temperature performance. It should be specified according to the actual system requirement and mating interface. Do not substitute finishes without confirming compatibility with the electrical joint and customer specification.
Specify only what the design needs

Include masking in the drawing
Plating and insulation must work together. Identify all surfaces that must remain bare, tinned or nickel plated. Clear masking instructions prevent an otherwise correct part from arriving with a coated contact pad or an unnecessarily finished hidden surface.
